Coronavirus outbreak, Novel Coronavirus Disease (COVID 19)

Coronavirus outbreak, Novel coronavirus Pandemic

Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a new type of coronavirus which may cause illness in humans or animals. In humans, most of the coronaviruses are known to cause respiratory infections ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases. It's an infectious disease caused by this virus. First identified in a cluster with pneumonia symptoms in Wuhan city, Hubei province of China.

The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are Fever, Tiredness, Dry cough. Some patients may have aches and pains, nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat, etc. These symptoms are usually mild and begin gradually.

Note: Only a person with symptoms and travel history can do the COVID 19 test. Additionally, about 80% of the people recover from the disease without needing special treatment.

Spreading of Coronavirus: Novel Coronavirus strains are spread from person to person through contaminated droplets (through coughing or sneezing) from a person who is sick with the illness or contaminated hands. This virus can spread through touching an infected surface. People can also get COVID-19 if they breathe in droplets from a person already caught COVID-19 who coughs out. This is an important reason to stay more than 1 meter (3 feet) away from a person who is sick.

The only treatment for COVID-19 so far is to give medicine to enhance the immunity level of the patients, treating the symptoms and easing complications, as there is no specific treatment for the virus to date.

Prevention of coronavirus disease (COVID 19):

CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAKWash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Normally hands should be washed after handling animals or animal waste, when hands are dirty, after toilet use, after coughing or sneezing, when caring for the sick, before during and after you prepare food & before and after eating.

In the absence of water and soap, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer which is also very effective.
Reason: Washing your hands with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand rub kills viruses that may be on your hands.

Boost your immunity by a healthy lifestyle such as eating healthy food, practicing physical exercises and getting enough sleep.

Avoid close contact with anyone showing signs of COVID-19 illness. People who are infected with the coronavirus stay away from others. When sneezing or coughing, make sure to cover your mouth and nose with a clean cloth or tissue then dispose of properly. Use your elbow in the absence of tissue.

Social distancing puts space between people. To maintain social distancing, follow these steps

Travel only if it is essential. Do not use public transportation including buses, subways, taxis, and rideshares.

Reason: When someone coughs or sneezes they spray small liquid droplets from their nose or mouth which may contain virus. If you are too close, you can breathe in the droplets, including the COVID-19 virus if the person coughing has the disease.
Try to work from home. Do not go to stores unless it is very necessary. Avoid getting together in person with friends. Closing schools, restaurants, shops, movie theatres and other places where people gather.

Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth

Reason: Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and can make you sick.

Practice respiratory hygiene

People should follow good respiratory hygiene. This means covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately.

Reason: Droplets spread virus. By following good respiratory hygiene you protect the people around you from viruses such as cold, flu and COVID-19.

If you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early.

You must stay home if you feel unwell. If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention and call in advance. Follow the directions of your local health authority.

Reason: National and local authorities will have the most up to date information on the situation in your area. Calling in advance will allow your health care provider to quickly direct you to the right health facility. This will also protect you and help prevent the spread of viruses and other infections.

Additional precautions to be taken: people while having respiratory symptoms such as a cough and a cold should not do shaking hands and just wave, nose-to-nose greeting and hugging or kissing others.

New York City became the epicenter of the U.S. coronavirus outbreak.

The global pandemic COVID-19 has brought life across the world to a standstill. Flights are stopped, people socially distant and roads are empty.

There are two types of masks commonly available in the market. 3 ply surgical masks and N-95 masks. N-95 masks are more expensive than 3 ply surgical masks. N-95 mask is a respiratory protective device designed for a close facial fit and efficient filtration of airborne particles. But 3 Ply surgical mask is loose-fit and contains a high-level static filtration, non-woven middle layer to effectively block particles.

If you touch the mask with dirty hands, the purpose of using a mask is lost. So make sure that your hands are washed and clean before touching the mask.
